Call for Participation: IEEE Women in Computational Intelligence and Women in Engineering Reception and Panel @ WCCI 2012
The IEEE Women in Computational Intelligence (WCI) Subcommittee and the Women in Engineering (WIE) Queensland Chapter have organised a joint panel and reception at IEEE WCCI in Brisbane on Tuesday 12th June from 5.10 to 7 pm at the Brisbane conference centre. The title of the panel is "Attracting and Retaining Women in the development of a Smart World".

Panellists Bios
Dr Shelly Brown, CEO Very Small Particle Company (VSPC)
Dr Brown joined VSPC in 2010 and has a background in Chemical Engineering, Applied Electrochemistry and BioElectrochemical Engineering. She completed a PhD in Electrochemical Engineering in Sweden, researching lithium-ion batteries for hybrid electric vehicles as part of the Swedish Green Car project together with Volvo, Saab and Scania. She also spent a year in Japan at the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency working in the energy storage group responsible for launching a lithium-ion battery into space onboard the LEO satellite REIMI. The project was a collaboration with NEC-Tokin, working on the battery technology now found on the Nissan Leaf. Prior to joining VSPC, Dr Brown was a Research Fellow at UQ and TU Delft, managing the BioElectrochemical Systems work performed by the Advanced Water Management Centre as part of the European Union project Neptune. Dr Brown has been awarded Nationally for Entrepreneurship (UQ Enterprize 2008) and Internationally for Innovation (Lettinga Award 2010). Dr Brown is currently the Interim Chief Executive Officer of the Very Small Particle Company, a R&D start-up based in Wacol, Queensland. The company is leading innovation in the manufacturing of nano-scale metal oxides for lithium-ion batteries."
Professor Sushita Mitra
Sushmita Mitra is the Head and a full Professor at the Machine Intelligence Unit, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. From 1992 to 1994 she was in the RWTH, Aachen, Germany as a DAAD Fellow. She was a Visiting Professor in the Computer Science Departments of the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada in 2004, 2007; Meiji University, Japan in 1999, 2004, 2005, 2007; and Aalborg University Esbjerg, Denmark in 2002, 2003. Dr. Mitra received the National Talent Search Scholarship (1978-1983) from NCERT, India, the University Gold Medal in 1988, the IEEE TNN Outstanding Paper Award in 1994 for her pioneering work in neuro-fuzzy computing, and the CIMPA-INRIA-UNESCO Fellowship in 1996. She is the author of the books ``Neuro-Fuzzy Pattern Recognition: Methods in Soft Computing" and ``Data Mining: Multimedia, Soft Computing, and Bioinformatics" published by John Wiley, and ``Introduction to Machine Learning and Bioinformatics", Chapman & Hall/CRC Press, beside a host of other edited books. Dr. Mitra has guest edited special issues of several journals, is an Associate Editor of ``IEEE/ACM Trans. on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics", ``Neurocomputing", and is a Founding Associate Editor of ``Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews: Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery (WIRE DMKD)". She has more than 75 research publications in referred international journals.
Dr. Mitra is a Fellow of the IEEE, Indian National Academy of Engineering and The National Academy of Sciences, India. Her current research interests include data mining, pattern recognition, soft computing, image processing, and Bioinformatics.
Professor Valerie Cross
Dr. Valerie Cross is an associate professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Miami University at Oxford where she has served as graduate director of the masters program in computer science. Her research interests include fuzzy approximate reasoning, fuzzy relational and object-oriented databases, fuzzy concept lattices, and the use of fuzzy logic within ontology web languages, ontology evaluation, ontology learning, ontology alignment, semantic search, and the role of similarity measurement on the Semantic Web. Dr. Cross has a written a book on fuzzy set compatibility measures and aggregation operators and a book chapter on semantic similarity measures. She has published over 50 refereed conference/workshop publications including recent publications for the 2011 International Conference on Biomedical Ontologies (ICBO) and the Ontology Matching (OM) Workshop at the 2011 International Conference on the Semantic Web. She has been a program chair for the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society (NAFIPS) Conference and has served on the NAFIPS Board of Directors for over 15 years and is currently its secretary. She has been a program committee member for numerous conferences including many Fuzz-IEEE conferences. She has been active within the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society. She served as chair of the Fuzzy Systems Technical Committee (FSTC) and is currently serving on the following committees of the IEEE Computational Society: Fuzzy Systems Technical Committee (FSTC), the Emergent Technologies Technical Committee (ETTC), and the Women in Computational Intelligence Committee (WCI). She recently has become a member of the FML (P1855) Standardization Workgroup. She also is a member of the IEEE Computer Society and the ACM.
Professor Marios M. Polycarpou
Marios M. Polycarpou is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Director of the KIOS Research Center for Intelligent Systems and Networks at the University of Cyprus. His research expertise is in the areas of intelligent systems and control, adaptive systems, computational intelligence, fault diagnosis, cooperative control and distributed agents. Dr. Polycarpou is a Fellow of the IEEE and the President of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society. He has recently been awarded the prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant. Between 2004-2010, he served as Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks. He has published more than 200 articles in journals and conference proceedings, and co-authored the book Adaptive Approximation Based Control (Wiley, 2006). He has been an invited Keynote Plenary Speaker at 15 international conferences during the last three years and is currently an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer in computational intelligence. He participated in more than 50 research projects/grants, funded by several agencies and industry in the United States, by the European Union and by the Research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus.
Professor Gary Yen
Gary Yen received the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana in 1992. He is currently a Professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Oklahoma State University. Before he joined OSU in 1997, he was with the Structure Control Division, U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory in Albuquerque, NM. His research is supported by the DoD, DoE, EPA, NASA, NSF, and Process Industry. His research interest includes intelligent control, computational intelligence, evolutionary multiobjective optimization, conditional health monitoring, signal processing and their industrial/defense applications. Gary was an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and IEEE Control Systems Magazine during 1994-1999, and of the IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man and Cybernetics and IFAC Journal on Automatica and Mechatronics during 1999-2006. He is currently serving as an associate editor for the IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation. He served as the General Chair for the 2003 IEEE International Symposium on Intelligent Control held in Houston, TX and 2006 IEEE World Congress on Computational Intelligence held in Vancouver, Canada. Gary served as Vice President for the Technical Activities, IEEE Computational Intelligence Society in 2004-2005 and is the founding editor-in-chief of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Magazine from 2006 to 2009. He is currently serving as President of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society in 2010-2011. He is a Fellow of IEEE.
